The complete first round ran 7–10 August and comprised 34 ties (three on 7 August: Wolverhampton Wanderers 3-0 Port Vale, Wycombe Wanderers 1-2 Stevenage, Middlesbrough 1-0 Wrexham; one on 9 August: Mansfield Town 0-3 Sheffield United; one on 10 August: Plymouth Argyle 2-0 Exeter City). We read all 34 ties at once, and from that seat one shape stands out: of every scoreline that finished level, only one appeared.
