Across the 78 WRs with 50+ targets in 2025, fantasy and opportunity ranks diverge — and the wedge is touchdowns

Justin Jefferson out-targeted, out-caught and out-gained Davante Adams last season — and finished 12 fantasy spots behind him, his 12-touchdown deficit outweighing every volume edge. We ranked the whole pool two ways to find where the box score and the workload disagree.

The Facts

We pulled the complete 2025 regular-season player log from nflverse and isolated every wide receiver who drew at least 50 targets: 78 players. We then ranked that pool twice — once by PPR fantasy points (output) and once by Weighted Opportunity Rating, or WOPR, which is 1.5 × a receiver's share of his team's targets plus 0.7 × his share of its air yards (the workload the offense actually handed him). The formula reproduces exactly against the stored values (K.Allen: 1.5 × 0.2243 + 0.7 × 0.2259 = 0.4945). Five of the 12 receivers who finished top-12 in PPR points ranked outside the top-12 in opportunity: George Pickens, Nico Collins, Davante Adams, Michael Wilson and Jameson Williams. The two poles: Davante Adams (Los Angeles Rams) finished WR9 of the 78 in PPR points — 114 targets, 60 catches, 789 yards, 14 touchdowns, 222.9 PPR — but WR27 in opportunity (WOPR 0.477, a 19.6% target share). Touchdowns supplied 84 of his 222.9 points, or 38%. Justin Jefferson (Minnesota) finished WR21 in points — 141 targets, 84 catches, 1,048 yards, 2 touchdowns, 201.5 PPR — but WR3 in opportunity (WOPR 0.720, a 30.1% target share and a 38.3% air-yards share). Touchdowns supplied 12 of his 201.5 points, or 6%. Jefferson out-targeted Adams (141 to 114), out-caught him (84 to 60) and out-gained him (1,048 to 789), and their per-game target rates were nearly identical (8.3 to 8.1) — yet Adams finished 12 fantasy spots ahead. The decisive column is touchdowns: Adams's 14-to-2 edge is worth 72 PPR points — enough to outweigh Jefferson's 49.9-point edge in receptions (24) and yards (25.9), a 22.1-point receiving swing that Jefferson's roughly 0.7 non-receiving points (rushing) trim to the actual 21.4-point gap. We then measured how much each layer carries from one year to the next. Among the 60 receivers who cleared 50 targets in both 2024 and 2025, year-over-year target share correlated at r = 0.61 and WOPR at r = 0.57; receiving yards at r = 0.52; receiving touchdowns at r = 0.25. The opportunity inputs repeat more than twice as strongly as the scores.

The Analysis

The following is analysis, not fact. A wide receiver's fantasy line is a noisy number stacked on a repeatable one. The repeatable part is the workload the offense assigns — targets, air yards, share of the route tree — because that is a decision a coaching staff makes weekly and largely re-makes the next season. The noisy part is what the scoreboard pays for that workload, and the loudest piece of it is touchdowns, which arrive in small integer counts on a few high-leverage plays. The 2024-to-2025 numbers put a figure on the difference: share of targets carried at r = 0.61, touchdown count at r = 0.25. Those are population-level persistences, not forecasts for any one player modeled. Read against that, the WR9 next to Davante Adams's name and the WR21 next to Justin Jefferson's are describing the same season from opposite ends. Adams reached WR9 while ranking 18 spots lower in opportunity, on a 38% touchdown share of his points — the highest reliance on the least-persistent input in the top tier. Jefferson posted the third-highest opportunity score of any wide receiver in 2025 and the scoreboard paid him like the 21st, because two of his 141 targets reached the end zone. Because WOPR is built from shares, not totals, the opportunity rank is not an artifact of games played — Adams's 14 games and Jefferson's 17 wash out in the rate. The PPR rank, a cumulative total, does not; that Adams reached WR9 in three fewer games only sharpens the touchdown story. What the single number on a bench or in a box score cannot show is which of those two seasons was built on the part of the game that tends to come back, and which on the part that tends not to.

Room for Disagreement

Opportunity is not destiny, and a correlation across 60 players says nothing certain about any one of them modeled. Touchdown rate persisting weakly in aggregate does not mean a specific receiver's scoring was luck: red-zone target share, a quarterback's habits and a team's play-caller are real, partly repeatable features, and Adams has cleared double-digit touchdowns many times modeled. Opportunity itself moves too — a trade, a new offensive coordinator, a rookie drafted above a veteran, or an injury can reset a receiver's target share, so a strong 2025 workload is not a guarantee of a 2026 one modeled. WOPR is one construction of "opportunity" and it omits things that matter, including down-and-distance, route quality, and how close-and-late a team's targets came modeled. The 50-target cut is a choice; a different threshold would reshuffle the edges of the 78-player pool, though the two poles sit far from any boundary. And PPR scoring rewards volume heavily — in a standard or half-PPR league the same two seasons would rank differently. None of this is a call on which receiver to draft; it is a map of where last year's scoreboard and last year's workload disagreed.

The View From

A manager who rostered Davante Adams in 2025 saw a top-nine receiver and a good decision, week after week; a manager who rostered Justin Jefferson saw a disappointment relative to the pick. The pool read is the part neither manager could see from a single roster: that the disappointment out-worked the success on every volume line and trailed it only in the column that repeats the least.
