We read all 10 Serie A openers: home and away scored 12 goals apiece — and the road teams won 6 of 10

Home advantage is the oldest edge in football. On the opening weekend of the 2026-27 Serie A season it went missing. We read the complete linescore and box score of all 10 matches in the round — Aug. 22 to 24, all 20 clubs, every match final — and the split is clean: the home team won 3, the road team won 6, and one match was drawn. The goals were dead even. Home teams scored 12 across the round; away teams scored 12. The difference wasn't production — both sides finished the same number of times — it was where the points landed. Six of the 10 matches ended with one team shut out, and five of those clean sheets were kept by the visiting side: Napoli won 2-0 at Genoa, Cagliari 1-0 at Parma, Juventus 1-0 at Frosinone, Lecce 2-0 at Venezia, and Lazio 1-0 at Bologna. The lone home clean sheet was Roma's 4-0 over Fiorentina. The two sharpest reversals were both hosts who controlled the ball and lost anyway. Venezia held 71.1% of possession — the highest share of any team in the round — out-shot Lecce 19 to 12 and 7 to 5 on target, and lost 0-2. Bologna held 58.6%, out-shot Lazio 14 to 10 and 5 to 3 on target, and lost 0-1. Both were shut out at home while doing most of the attacking.

Strip the numbers and this collapses — you can't tell a story about home and away from adjectives. The 12-12 goal split is the tell the standings hide: two groups of clubs finished level, 12 goals each, and one group walked off with twice as many wins. Home teams pooled their goals into three routs — Inter 4-1 over Monza, Roma 4-0, Atalanta 2-1 over Sassuolo — while the road teams spread theirs into six results, five by clean sheet. Venezia and Bologna are the two clearest cases of controlling a match without converting it. Between them they took 33 shots to their opponents' 22 and held 71.1% of the ball in Venezia's game and 58.6% in Bologna's — and scored zero. That is not possession failing as a rule: across the round, the team with more of the ball still won 7 of the 9 decisive matches. It is the specific, visible-only-in-aggregate fact that five hosts held a majority of the ball — Venezia, Inter, Roma, Bologna and Atalanta — and only two of them, Venezia and Bologna, came away with nothing; the other three all won.

The honest limit is sample. This is one round — 10 matches, a single opening weekend — not a season. Home-field advantage is a long-run average, and a 3-6-1 split for the hosts sits well within normal variance for any given matchday; opening-round sides are still settling their lineups, and a snapshot is not a trend ^mmodeled. A skeptic can also note the two possession-heavy losses are just two games, and that the round otherwise rewarded the ball-winner 7 times in 9. Both are fair. What the complete-round read adds is the magnitude on this particular weekend: equal goals, opposite outcomes, and the points on the road.

From one stadium, Venezia's Saturday looked like a robbery — 71% of the ball, 19 shots, and a 0-2 scoreline that flattered the visitors. Read across all 10 matches, it stops looking like bad luck and starts looking like the weekend's signature: home and away scored the same 12 goals, and the road side turned its half into six wins while the hosts managed three. For Venezia and Bologna, the clubs that kept the ball were not the clubs that kept the points — but across the round, the team with more of the ball still won more often than not.
