The world's forests shrank by 96 million hectares in 20 years — but 82 of 207 countries gained forest, and five tropical nations drove more than half the loss

Read every national ledger and the net decline dissolves into a tug-of-war: China alone added half of all the forest the world gained — offsetting a quarter of the losses on a metric that counts a new plantation the same as a felled rainforest.

The Facts

We pulled the forest-area figure for every economy the World Bank tracks, drawn from the UN Food and Agriculture Organization's Global Forest Resources Assessment 2020 (series AG.LND.FRST.K2), for the assessment's two reference years, 2000 and 2020. Of 217 economies, 207 reported both years; the 10 left out include Sudan and South Sudan, split in 2011, and Serbia and Montenegro, split in 2006, which carry a 2020 figure but no 2000 baseline in the series. FAO defines forest as land under "natural or planted stands of trees" at least five metres tall — a definition that counts a monoculture plantation and a primary rainforest the same. Across the 207, forest area fell from 41.17 million to 40.21 million square kilometres — a net loss of 960,529 km², about 96 million hectares, or 2.3% of the 2000 total. That averages roughly 4.8 million hectares a year, inside the 4.7-to-5.2-million-hectare range FAO reports for the two decades. But the decline is not a broad global tide. Country by country the ledger nearly splits: 91 of the 207 lost forest, 82 gained it, and 34 reported no change. The 91 losing countries shed 1.81 million km² between them; the 82 gaining countries added 853,000 km². The gains cancelled 47% of the gross loss on paper. And the loss is concentrated: five countries — Brazil, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Angola, Indonesia and Tanzania — account for 55% of all forest lost, the top ten for 70%. Brazil alone lost 544,690 km² (−9.9%), the largest single-country change on Earth in either direction. The largest gain — and the second-largest change of any kind — is China's: +429,774 km², a 24% rise. That one increase equals half of all the forest the 82 gaining countries added, and by itself offsets 79% of Brazil's loss and 24% of the world's entire gross loss. The five biggest gainers — China, the United States, Russia, India and Vietnam — supplied 73% of the added area.

The Analysis

A single figure — "the world lost 2.3% of its forest" — is a poor summary of what the 207 ledgers actually show, because it nets trends of opposite sign against each other. modeled By headcount the world is nearly evenly split; the net decline is the residue of a concentrated tug-of-war between a handful of tropical countries clearing forest and a handful of temperate and East Asian countries adding it. The offset is real arithmetic but not real equivalence. FAO's own definition counts a planted stand and a natural one identically, so a hectare of new plantation cancels a hectare of felled primary forest on the ledger. That the world's gross losses were nearly halved by gains does not mean half the ecological loss was recovered: the area metric cannot say how much of the 853,000 km² gained was plantation rather than natural regrowth, nor how much of the 1.81 million km² lost was primary rather than secondary forest. That decomposition needs data these figures do not carry. The geography of the split — losers clustered in tropical, lower-income economies, gainers in higher-income temperate zones plus fast-industrialising Asia — matches the "forest transition" pattern researchers describe, in which countries move from net loss to net gain as they urbanise and abandon farmland. speculative We did not join an income or land-use variable, or model competing explanations; the pattern is consistent with that account, not a mechanism these counts isolate.

Room for Disagreement

The strongest counter is that net forest area is the internationally agreed measure, and planted forests are forests — they store carbon, supply timber that relieves pressure on natural stands, and can rebuild some biodiversity over time. On this reading, treating the offset as illusory imposes a contested ecological standard the area metric was never built to carry, and the gains in China, Europe and North America are genuine recovery, not an accounting trick. A second, fair objection: the tropical-loss, temperate-gain split is exactly the forest transition at work — countries at different development stages, not a moral ledger. Europe and the eastern United States are regrowing forest cleared centuries ago; today's tropical losers may follow the same path. Third, on method: the annual path between 2000 and 2020 in this series is interpolated between FAO's reference years, so intermediate-year movements are not independent observations. That is why every figure here rests only on the two reference years FAO actually assessed, and why we make no claim about the timing of change inside the window.

The View From

From Brasília and Kinshasa, the ledger reads as a double standard. The forest the tropics are clearing is where the planet's biodiversity and carbon concentrate, cleared often for commodity exports wealthier consumers buy; the forest the global North is regrowing sits on land it felled generations ago on its own way to wealth. modeled From Beijing, the same numbers are a national achievement — decades of afforestation turned into the single largest forest gain on Earth — and a reminder that "the world is losing forest" is a sentence that erases the country doing the most, on this metric, to add it. Both readings rest on the same 207 figures; neither is visible from a single-country vantage.
