All 78 WRs with 50+ targets in 2025: PPR points tracked volume, not depth — aDOT ran 3.7 to 19.0 and barely moved the total

Across every wideout who saw 50 targets in the 2025 regular season, full-PPR points correlated 0.97 with receiving yards and −0.01 with how far downfield those targets flew. The pool's deepest-target receiver and a far shallower one finished six-tenths of a point apart.

The Facts

A single-team manager spends draft season sorting receivers by type — deep threat or possession, contested-catch or yards-after-catch. We read all 78 so you don't have to sort by archetype: the fantasy scoreboard already ignored it. We pulled the complete 2025 regular-season receiving line for every player nflverse classifies as a wide receiver, then held the 78 who saw at least 50 targets. Across those 78, full-PPR fantasy points correlated 0.97 with receiving yards, 0.95 with receptions, and 0.93 with targets. Volume, in three forms, all but drew the finish. Average depth of target — air yards divided by targets, the standard read of how far downfield a receiver is thrown — ranged from 3.7 yards (Khalil Shakir) to 19.0 (Alec Pierce), a median of 11.3. Its correlation with PPR points was −0.01. The share of a receiver's yards that came after the catch correlated 0.03. Two of the metrics that define what *kind* of receiver a player is moved the season total by essentially nothing. Sort the pool into thirds by depth and the point holds: the shallowest 26 averaged a 7.8-yard aDOT and 157.2 PPR points; the deepest 26 averaged 13.6 yards and 149.2 — on 90 targets against 85. Alec Pierce, the deepest target profile in the pool, caught 47 of his throws for 1,003 yards and 183.3 PPR points; Keenan Allen, worked at less than half that depth, caught 81 for 777 yards and 182.7 — six-tenths of a point apart over a 17-game season.

The Analysis

The following is analysis, not fact. Full-PPR scoring is, mechanically, a volume counter: a point per catch, a tenth per yard, six per touchdown. Nothing in the formula asks where the catch happened. So the entire vocabulary of receiver evaluation that a manager agonizes over in August — field-stretcher versus chain-mover, the 19.0-yard aDOT versus the 3.7 — lands on the same ledger line the moment the yards are totaled. Pierce and Allen ran opposite route trees to the identical fantasy result. That is not the same as saying depth is worthless. It is saying depth is orthogonal to the *scoring* signal, and that the number a manager can actually count on is the boring one: targets, and the receiving yards they produce. Analysts who model this forward reach the same place from the other direction — that role (the targets and air yards an offense assigns) persists year to year, while the conversion layered on top of it does not modeled. Depth shapes how a receiver gets his yards; volume decides how many. In 2025's completed record, only the second one showed up in the fantasy column.

Room for Disagreement

A season correlation flattens exactly what makes depth matter. A 19.0-yard aDOT is a boom-bust profile — Pierce's 1,003 yards arrived in fewer, larger pieces than Allen's, which means his week-to-week variance and his ceiling on any given Sunday were higher even though the totals converged modeled. Depth also carries touchdown and big-play equity that a full-season sum blends away. And volume is not fully independent of depth: an offense's decision to throw a receiver deep is part of the same role that earns him targets, so "just chase volume" oversimplifies the causal chain modeled. This is also one season and 78 players — a within-year cross-section, not a law, and next year's target leaders will be different names speculative.

The View From

From inside a single roster, the deep threat and the possession receiver feel like different bets with different payoffs. Read across the whole pool, the payoff — the season fantasy total — barely knew which one it was paying.
